Your child measures, screws, hammers and sands their way to a real carry toolbox. It fights back three times: a side that won't sit square, a box that rocks, and — days later, only when they pick it up — something that moves in their hand. Nothing tells them what is wrong.
At the end they put their name on it, and their tools go inside.

What they'll be able to do
Six things — and how they prove each one.
We don't claim a skill we can't describe a child demonstrating. Every line below has a test beside it, and your child either passes it or doesn't.
I can set up my workspace and work safely.
Glasses on before the first strike. Board stable. Free hand behind the strike line. Tools back in the tray between jobs.
I can measure and mark exactly where I want.
Marks a given distance within 2mm, from the right end of the ruler, with a mark thin enough to aim at.
I can drive a screw straight, and I know when to stop.
Screw seated flush — not proud, not sunk past flush. Run a fingernail across it and you shouldn't catch.
I can hammer safely and accurately.
Nail driven within about 10° of upright, head flush, no strike outside the target, free hand never in the strike path.
I can find a rough edge and make it smooth.
Finds the rough section by touch with their eyes closed, sands it, and it passes the same eyes-closed test afterwards.
I can find what's wrong, fix it, and check that I fixed it.
Given a fault nobody has named: notices it, says what's wrong, picks the right tool unprompted, repairs it, and tests the repair without being asked to.
Before you buy it
Three things are wrong with this box.
Every Qiko mission has faults built into it on purpose. Nothing tells your child what they are — that’s the part they have to do. Find all three here.

This is the product, not an advert for it. In the real box nothing is marked — and the first fault can’t be seen at all. It only shows itself when they pick the toolbox up and carry it across the room.

The toolbox, in pieces
Birch ply, pre-cut — base, two sides, two ends
Cut, not kitted: there is no click-together plastic here. The panels meet where the child puts them, which is why one of them can be wrong.
Pine corner cleats
Softwood, 20 × 20mm
The box is screwed to these and the base is nailed into them. Ply edges split under a nail; pine takes one — so both tools are here because the construction needs them, not because a curriculum wanted five verbs.

Not a toy one. A 100g hammer bounces, takes thirty strikes and teaches the opposite lesson — the weight is what does the work.

With a findable zero. Half the measuring mistakes a child makes come from a ruler whose zero isn't at the end.
Safety glasses
Child-sized, impact-rated
Child-sized, because adult glasses slide down and get taken off. Also the ritual that tells everyone this is real.
Sanding block, two grits
Coarse and fine
A block, not loose paper. Loose paper teaches nothing about pressure, and it is why most sanding ends up uneven.
Screws, nails and a lidded tin

Enough to get it wrong several times. The tin is where they live afterwards, which is a habit worth building early.
And deliberately not in the box
No drill, no saw, no electronics, no craft consumables, no plastic version of anything. Kits drift towards “lots of stuff” because stuff looks like it justifies the price. What justifies this one is what your child can do at the end of it.

Anyone can build a kit. Can they fix one?
Every kit for children makes something. Follow the plan, the thing works, done. Almost nobody teaches the other half — working out what's wrong when nobody has told you anything. That's the harder skill, it's the one that transfers to everything else, and it's what the last two cards in this box are for.
Something isn't right here.
That's the whole card. No zone, no clue, no list. They have to notice it first.
Then the one that fights back.
The next fault can't be fixed by tightening — tightening is what broke it. It's the only thing in the box that punishes the obvious answer, and it's the point of the whole afternoon.
Then you break three things.
There's a sealed card telling you exactly how. Two minutes, and you say nothing afterwards. They have to find all three, and each one is found a different way — by looking, by pressing, by touch.
The obvious question
Yes, it's a real hammer. That's the point.
The most common question, answered before you have to ask it.
- You're in the room. The whole time.
- Within arm's reach, sitting down. This isn't a product that entertains your child while you do something else, and we'd rather say so now.
- You step in exactly twice.
- Once to check the glasses are on. Once if something's genuinely unsafe — a hand in the strike path, a tool pointed at a face. Everything else, you sit on your hands.
- Small tools, real ones.
- A 225g hammer, a child-sized screwdriver, impact-rated glasses. Nothing that cuts, nothing with a motor, nothing that plugs in.
- Designed so mistakes are cheap.
- Short nails, a card holder that keeps fingers out of the strike path, and a claw so anything that goes in can come back out. Getting it wrong should cost a second attempt, nothing more.
- Not for under-sevens.
- And the screws and nails are a choking hazard, so they live in a lidded tin away from smaller siblings.
Common questions
What parents actually ask.
- Is my child old enough?
- Eight at the youngest. Every challenge comes at three difficulties and the child picks — so an eight-year-old and a twelve-year-old get the same box and a different afternoon. If you're near the bottom of that, message us and we'll be straight with you about it.
- A real hammer, though?
- 225 grams, wooden handle, child-sized, with safety glasses in the box. Nothing that cuts, nothing with a motor, nothing that plugs in. You're in the room throughout, and the mission card tells you exactly when to step in. A toy hammer bounces off the nail and takes thirty strikes, which teaches a child that they can't do it — that's the outcome we're trying to avoid.
- How much do I have to do?
- Very little, on purpose. You step in twice — once to check the glasses are on, once if something's genuinely unsafe. There's one card for you that explains the rest. The hard part isn't the doing, it's the not-doing.
- What if they can't do it?
- Then they've hit the part that matters. Every challenge has a mistake designed into it and every one costs nothing to undo — a bent nail comes out, a screw goes back in. There's a hint folded into each card if they want it. Getting stuck isn't the failure state here, it's the product.
- Is this a subscription?
- No. One box, bought once. The tools are theirs for good — so the missions that come after this one cost a fraction of it, because there's no hammer to send you twice. Nothing renews and there's nothing to cancel.
- When can I actually get one?
- Not yet, and we'd rather say so. Six will be hand-built in Mumbai and tested with six children first. If it teaches what we think it teaches, we make a proper run — and the list is who we come to first. If it doesn't, we'll tell you that too.
